We are in the home stretch of finishing up our homeschool year, just a few more weeks and we will be on our summer break! This past week I gave Anna the assignment of writing about what she learned in Kindergarten this year. I didn't give her any other directions other than that. I simply wanted to see what she would come up with, and I love what she wrote about. And this is what I got.
In case you can't figure out what all the words are, this is what it says. "I've learned in grammar what adjectives are. I've learned about God, about sharing, to tell the truth. In math I've learned to add." Out of all the things she learned academically, I find it funny that she only mentioned addition and adjectives. But the part I love the most is how she mentioned learning about God, sharing, and telling the truth. I am so happy that those are the things that stuck out to her. Although academics are very important to me, I'll take those three things above all others. I know I will treasure this paper for a long time.

I love this post! I especially love your second to last sentance when you wrote, "Although academics are very important to me, I'll take those three things above all others."
That, in a nutshell, is basically my "philosophy of education" now that I'm a parent. (I was an education major, so I had to have one of those . . .) Academics are important to me, and I have high expectations for my kids once they go to school BUT it is not the "end all" and "be all" for me. I'm not stressing which school they go to. I'm not losing sleep over whether or not they get into the "right" school.
More than anything I want my kids to love God, serve Him and be honest and hardworking members of society. I heard Dr. Tim Kimmel (He wrote Grace Based Parenting) say that edcuation is important to him and his wife and that all four of their kids were expected to go to college, but that we've made a god out of education in this country and it isn't the most important thing. I first heard that when Joshua was a year old and it really resonated with me. Education is important, but I believe my child's character is MORE important.
Great Job, Mom and Dad . . . you're obviously doing something right :)
