Mother's day

Mother's day was such a special day. It was one of the best mother's day I have had. I'm not exactly sure why but maybe it's because we have totally simplified our lives since Michael has been out of work. We had a very simple life before, but had to simplify even more since taking a cut in our budget. There wasn't a lot of money to go buy gifts this year, which was fine by me. Receiving gifts isn't at the top of my list anyways, words and actions are at the top of my list when it comes to me feeling loved.

So Sunday morning I woke up to the most amazing homemade cards with the most beautiful words. I could tell Michael and the kids took time making each one, decorating them, and filling them with meaningful words. They had also gone to the dollar store and each one of them picked out two things for me. I loved the diversity of what they chose. Camden (who LOVES anything that has to do with gifts) got me a bell so I could use it during our homeschool day, and he also got me a picture to hang on the wall of a flower. Annagrace got me a package of Jr. Mints (She loves anything food related and she knows what I love) and she also got me a light up yellow necklace. Jadon who is my most practical child got me gardening gloves and a zen garden that he said I can use when they are getting me worked up during homeschool. The thought they put into picking the goodies out meant the world to me.

After getting ready that morning, we decided to go check out the new orangutan exhibit at the zoo where we have our annual passes. It was an amazing exhibit and we enjoyed some time walking around the zoo before it got too hot. We then headed to In and Out for lunch and it was delicious! After that the rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing at home. I think I spent more time on the couch than I have in quite some time. It was wonderful. We ended the night with Michael making dinner (by this time my love tank was overflowing) and watching Forever Strong which was a GREAT movie.

It truly was a fabulous day!

Arizona, how I love thee

I love my state of Arizona. I love everything about it, even the extreme heat of the summers. Well, maybe that's stretching it but thanks to our pool and the monsoon storms we get it makes it all worth it. I especially love this time of year before we hit the 100's. After dinner, we spend time outside until bedtime. It is simply lovely. Tonight, Anna did this:
 While Pepper did this.
 the chickens did their thing.
Camden did the normal boy thing.
It was a great pre-summer night!
The other night we got to puppysit this sweet little guy named Jasper. It happens to be our niece's dog and she was so generous to share him for the night. Anna fell deeply in love with this sweetie pie and even cried and cried when she woke up the next morning and he was gone.

Hoping less not hopeless

It has now been one month since Michael has been out of work. I wish I can say it has flown by but it has moved at a snails pace making it feel like way more than a month. Don't get me wrong, we love having Michael at home we just wish it was under different circumstances so we could actually enjoy the time and not constantly be thinking about him finding a job. It is certainly weighing on us. At least we take turns and the days I'm feeling down, he's feeling up and vice versa. We balance each other well. The past two weeks it's been my turn to be discouraged while Michael is feeling pretty good.  I know God gives us the promise in His Word that He knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, and plans to give us a hope and future (Jeremiah 29:11). I know that promise is for us during this time and that God wants nothing more than to bless us and bless us with an abundant life (John 10:10). But for the first time in a very long time if ever, I have a seed of doubt with that promise and find myself wondering if God will indeed provide a job for Michael that he will prosper in and find rewarding. My hope for our situation seems to be fading and I find myself having a little less hope than I normally do. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hopeless, just hoping less. I've been praying about this and asking for God to provide me with hope that comes daily if that be through scripture, my prayer time, talks with friends, a song on the radio, or however else God seems fitting to bring me hope. I can't say I've felt this yet but I did set up an area for me to meet with God because I know it's in Him that I will find this HOPE. Our weather in Arizona has been AMAZING with cool mornings and cool evenings which have made the outdoors the place to be. So here is my little nook that I love and it's here that I hope to gain a little hope and perspective as we wait on God to fulfill His promise.

I've got my outdoor rocking chair, my favorite fuzzy blanket, a foot rest, a side table where my water can sit, and a planting pot that is currently not holding any flowers where I can place some reading material.
I got this blanket at Goodwill and it happens to be my favorite. It is so fuzzy and comfy.
This old milk jug comes in handy for holding my ice water, the phone, or whatever else I want nearby.
I love this tree. It brings some color to the area.
If you ever stop by, you are welcome to sit with me in my little nook. I'll pull up another chair and we can sit and chat.

violence, it's sucking them in

In raising boys, we (my husband and I) have always had on the forefront of our radar the importance of raising them to be Godly men in a culture that is stained with sexual sin/pornography. From the time our boys were young enough to to have an understanding of modesty, we started teaching them in this area. They know the importance of girls/women dressing modestly and we now have on our hands "fashion police" for myself and their younger sister, the boys love to point out when we might be showing too much skin and bikinis are strictly forbidden in our pool, per the boys. When we are out in public and they see an inappropriate bill board or poster, they have taught themselves to look the other way. We have a code word we use when we see something like that, we simply start saying brand names of shoes like Nike, Reebok, Addidas, etc.. and that is a clue to look at your feet. We adopted that from the popular show 19 Kids and Counting. We thought it to be so corny at the time but we tried it once when we were walking by Victoria's Secret at the mall and it just stuck. When a commercial comes on TV and it is inappropriate, the boys are the first to say something and cover their eyes. They know to be careful when on the Internet and that is the reason our computer is in the living area where we can all see what is going on. Getting rid of cable has been beneficial as it limits the channel selection and we now spend less time watching TV. Movies come with ratings, and we try our best to keep it age appropriate.

All this to say, I feel like there has been another area in our culture that has slowly creaped into our home and it's time we (Michael and I) as parents start paying attention to it. Like I said earlier, the sexual culture we live in has always been something on the forefront of our minds when raising boys but we seem to have not spent much time teaching them awareness about another topic, and that is violence. There have been many times when our kids have been exposed to violence on TV, in a movie, and mostly on the video games we have allowed them to play on the x-box. For the past month this has weighed heavy on my heart and I have been talking to God about it. I feel (in my personal opinion) that our culture is making a shift from the sexual sin of man and moving towards infiltrating young boys minds with violence. I'm not saying that pornography is not running rampant like wildfire because it is, but I do feel like people (Christian and non) are more aware of this issue and there are so many organizations in place now to help people who struggle with sexual sins. But violence in media seems to have infiltrated without us even being aware of it's heavy impact on our pre-teen boys. Like with any sin, it starts small and gets progressively worse and you crave more of it and before you know it you are dealing with a full blown case of something that is not honoring to God.

For example, we have allowed the boys to play an x-box game that is very popular among boys their age called Halo, they even have Lego Halo toys (it was a hot item at Christmas). The game consists of alien creatures fighting and they have different weapons they can use. You can build your own military base and set it up the way you want. Michael and I agreed this game would be acceptable after researching it, reading about it, talking to other parents about it, and playing it ourselves before we allowed the boys to play. It was not a decision that was made lightly. After playing this game for a while, it was no longer as exciting to the boys so they wanted to move on to another game that we let them get last weekend when they traded in a game. I am embarrassed to admit the name of the game but we are not perfect parents and we make mistakes so we allowed them to get Call of Duty, Modern Warfare. Just the name sounds violent, what were we thinking? After seeing them play it last weekend and yesterday, I couldn't handle it anymore. This game doesn't have alien creatures fighting but humans fighting in a war like setting. It is very intense, very violent, and not age appropriate for our boys. So this morning I talked with Michael and we agreed that this game was going to leave our home. We knew this would be disappointing to the boys and not go over well with them because after all, it's very popular among their friends. So we dropped the bomb, and you would have thought a real bomb went off in our home with one child in particular (the other one really could careless), but we knew we were doing what is right. Luckily, we were not seeing any concerning behavior they were exhibiting from playing this game other than an obsession to want to play it, and that was a red flag for me.

It's time we take a closer look and teach our boys awareness about violence and what it can lead to, an area we have somewhat neglected in their upbringing. We still need to have a discussion about the Halo game as it comes with the same rating like the Call of Duty game. And I'll just mention here that I do believe a lot of the video games are over rated because if it comes with a low rating, it's not as attractive so they up the rating to make it more attractive. How messed up is that? Personally, I think the whole gaming industry is messed up.

In conclusion, this is the beginning of us recognizing an issue in our family and doing something about it. I'm thankful for this time and I hope it will be a time of teaching as we train our children up in the way we want them to go so when they are teenagers and young adults they will be equipped with making God honoring decisions.

If you took the time to read this, I would love your feedback!

Goodbye Easter, hello summer!

The Easter egg hunts are over.
 The Easter baskets were filled.
Our waist sizes have expanded, darn Easter candy!
I'm not sure how to transition from Easter to this so I won't even try. Camden never does anything without incorporating some type of invention. Tonight he swept the patio but first he made this contraption to make his chore more fun.
Swimming season is in full force around this house. Although the water is still too cold for most, the kids don't seem bothered. Anna does outlast her brothers though, shhhh- don't tell them I told you that.

As much as I love to sleep, I couldn't resist waking up in middle of the night at 3 a.m. for a good love story and watch the Royal Wedding.
Watching Prince William and Kate Middleton get married was amazing. I loved every minute of it.
